Why do you need a headboard?

As most people know, all rooms have a focal point. When it comes to bedrooms the focal point is usually quite clear - the bed. This means that the bed should be a haven of calm; an area that feels warm and inviting, and stands out in the space of the room. One way to ensure that the bed is a focal point is through a headboard, which can enhance the overall look of your room and add a whole new level of texture and style.

There is however more to a headboard than just its charming good looks. If you’re an avid reader or someone who likes to prop themselves up in bed when they’re getting snug then you may find that you’re lacking in back support without a headboard. Not only that, but you might even be marking the wall by leaning on it repeatedly, doing damage that will require redecorating in the long term. Headboards, particularly padded upholstered variants, are a great way of supporting your back and providing a buffer from a cold wall, whilst protecting your walls from general wear and tear.

Aside from the practical plus points for having a headboard there are lots more reasons that all revolve around one simple fact - they look really, really good. There are tons of options when it comes to headboards, from opulent upholstered versions in quality fabrics to regal wrought iron frames and solid leather panels.

If your bed doesn't currently have a headboard then there are a few options you could explore. You could choose to buy a separate headboard and then attach it to your existing bed frame, or get creative and flaunt your DIY skills by making your own. Anything is possible, whether you choose an unconventional substitute like an old door, planks from broken down pallets or even a bookcase, which can double as out-of-sight storage if you use the lower shelves that are behind the bed.
