History of Skovby furniture

Skovby was first founded back in 1933, by Danish cabinetmaker Thorvald Rasmussen. The company has modern Danish design at its core, with Rasmussen pushing forward with his strong vision for producing beautiful, functional furniture design.

This functionality was something that Skovby has managed to keep as a driving force behind it’s work, with this passion for function passing on to Rasmussen’s son, Villy, and grandsons Preben and Jørgen. According to Skovby, “functional furniture creates room, flow and efficiency in our everyday life. It is useful, durable and valued even after many years of use.” The Rasmussen family feel that this is the core of their entire brand’s success.

Skovby furniture soon became popular around the world, with it being produced on production lines in less than 20 years. Soon after this, Skovby became part of an international dealership network - helping people throughout the world to become familiar with their furniture.

As well as function, the Skovby brand prides itself on sustainability. With a focus on natural materials and a sustainable business model, Skovby is able to produce high quality, beautiful furniture with a positive environmental impact. This message carries through right down to the wood they use, which is all primarily harvested in quality plantations through Europe and North America - which only harvest wood to the same quantity which is planted every year.

When it comes to Skovby furniture, they specialise in dining tables and chairs, as well as sideboards and display units. The brand was one of the first to push the boundaries when it came to extension systems for tables, giving people a whole new world of flexibility, something which continues to this day -  meaning that whether you need a table for 4 or for 20, there’s sure to be something that suits your needs.

As well as dining tables and chairs, the Skovby brand is famous for its excellent, functional storage furniture. Coming from Rasmussen’s background as a cabinetmaker, the Skovby storage solutions come with a variety of different options, from hinged or sliding doors to drawers with specialised inserts. As well as the formation and layout, a variety of wood finishes is available on all Skovby products, helping to further personalise the furniture and make it a perfect fit for each and every home.

Today, Thorvald Rasmussen’s grandsons run Skovby with the same intentions and priorities as their grandfather did back in the 1930’s. All Skovby furniture is designed and produced at a Danish manufacturing complex, where quality is monitored at every stage; not only the wood, but everything from the fittings and lacquers to the packaging used to ship your newly created Skovby furniture out to you.
