Hypnos is a British family-run bed manufacturer that has been making luxurious pocket sprung beds by hand since Edwardian times. The current chairman is Peter Keen. He’s the fourth generation of Keen to head up the business, and his children are the fifth generation to help run the business day-to-day.

Each Hypnos bed is handcrafted to order using traditional skills that have been passed down through the generations. The bespoke nature of the beds means that you can tailor your bed to be as individual as you. Hypnos is world renowned for creating luxury deep pocket sprung divans.

This reputation has led Hypnos to be the only company to have won the National Bed Federation’s “Bed Manufacturer of the Year Award” twice, and the only bed manufacturer to supply the British Royal Family with a Royal Warrant. The company also takes upholstery commissions for the Royal Family and has recently replaced the banquet seating for the Ballroom at Buckingham Palace.

Hypnos has won the “Comfiest Bed” category in the annual Best Kept Secret Award by LateRooms.com for the last five years, and can be found in hotels around the globe.

Vispring Beds

Vispring bed from Lukehurst in Kent

Vispring has been selling luxury bespoke beds since 1901. The company is credited as the inventor of the pocket spring mattress after the design was created by James Marshall. Marshall was an English engineer working in Canada when his wife fell ill. He created a pocket sprung mattress to provide his wife with the perfect night’s sleep.

John Nolon and Frederick James tried to promote Marshall’s innovative mattress in Britain, however local manufacturers were not taken with the idea so they set up The Marshall Sanitary Mattress Company in September 1901 to manufacture and market the mattresses themselves. By 1911 the company had adopted the Vispring name and became well known for its pure luxurious comfort. Vispring mattresses have been found in the first class cabins of the Titanic and Queen Elizabeth II, and suites at London’s Park Lane and Savoy hotels.

Today, Vispring mattresses are still made entirely by hand to order. The company even makes their own springs and you can specify your preferred tension to ensure the perfect bed. Vispring only used the finest natural fibres, including sheep’s wool, silk and horsetail. The handstitched sides provide supportive strength and longevity to the mattress. It takes the craftsmen many years to master the intricate side-stitching technique.
